The Tragedy of the Titanic
A Magnificent Ship
The Titanic was the largest ship in the world in its day and was built in Belfast in Ireland. The Titanic had 9 decks and was 269m in length and could carry a maximum of 3547 passengers and crew but sadly the ship had only 20 lifeboats on board.
A Maiden Voyage
When the Titanic set sail on its Maiden Voyage across the Atlantic on April 10th, 1912, no one expected the Titanic to sink. It was reported that an employee of The White Star Line said that: “Not even God could sink this ship”. At 11.40pm on April 14th 1912 the Titanic hit an iceberg eventually causing the ship to sink in the early hours of the next morning with more than 1500 people perishing in the icy waters of the Atlantic.
A Misplaced Confidence
When the Titanic struck the iceberg some of the passengers and crew thought that a “small” iceberg could do little harm to the “unsinkable” ship. False confidence in the safety of the Titanic caused numbers of people to stay aboard rather than to heed the warnings to abandon the vessel. History recalls that there were 472 unfilled vacant spaces in the lifeboats that were launched.
A Marvellous Hero
John Harper was a Baptist Church minister on the Titanic travelling with his young daughter. When it was apparent that
the Titanic would sink, he made sure that his daughter was placed in a lifeboat. Harper also gave up his own life
jacket to save another passenger and continued with his life’s work of sharing the good news of the Gospel. Harper courageously shared the Gospel with fellow passengers and even in the freezing waters of the Atlantic, continued telling others about the saving grace of Jesus Christ until his final breath.

A Marred World
Like a storm-tossed vessel being swept toward disaster, sin has carried this world far from God’s intended course and toward certain judgment and death. That is why every person needs the rescue that God has provided through Jesus Christ, who alone can deliver us from the power, penalty, and eternal consequences of sin.
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
