DEAR LORD AND FATHER OF MANKIND

DEAR LORD AND FATHER OF MANKIND

September 23, 2020

Australia seems to have embraced the manufactured fear of the Wuhan Virus. Algy reminded me of this wonderful hymn that he sang at School. What better way to throw off the shackles of fear, the negative messages coming out of Stalag Luft Victoria governed by Gauleiter Andrews and raise our thoughts to our maker. Algy tells me that, since he turned from his foolish ways, he found himself on The Glory Bound Highway of life.

Here is the last verse of this inspiring Hymn written in an age of hope and reason:

Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire,
Speak through the earthquake, wind and fire,
O still small voice of calm,
O still small voice of calm!

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807 – 1892)

Beautiful and completely focuses us in the right place. Where do we find that still some voice of calm? In the closet in our private time with Him. Hallelujah and thank you for posting.

My father requested that I read this hymn to him on the day he passed away. They are such meaningful and re-assuring words for a believer’s heart and mind.
I admit I’m not too fond of the tune “Repton” that generally accompanies this hymn, but I love the “Rest” tune for this hymn.
My favourite verse in this hymn?
“Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
    Forgive our foolish ways!
Reclothe us in our rightful mind,
In purer lives Thy service find,
    In deeper reverence, praise.”
    The “Rest” version is –

Thank you Paul, Algy likes Repton because it is the version he sang at School. He is an old stick in the mud and I have to humour the cantankerous old boy, or he cuts down my banana rations! Gibber! Gibber! Chugley
