‘Man’s Mechanical Makeover’

Transhumanism is the idea that humans can use machines, robotics, genetics, and technology to enhance and redesign people to overcome normal human limitations including ageing, weaknesses and even death. 

The concept of transhumanism is not new, Julian Huxley an English biologist and evolutionist popularized the term ‘Transhumanism’ in his 1957 essay titled, ‘New Bottles for New Wine.’

Max More, a British philosopher and futurist defined transhumanism as “a class of philosophy of life that seeks the continuation and acceleration of the ‘evolution’ of intelligent life beyond its currently human form and human limitations by means of science and technology, guided by life-prompting principles and values” (The Coming Robot Revolution, Yoseph Bar-Cohen, David Hanson, 2009).

When I consider transhumanism, I cannot help but see its roots tracing all the way back to Satan’s deception in Genesis 3. There in the garden Satan, tempted Eve with the possibility of extra knowledge and God-like characteristics saying, “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5).  From that very moment, Satan has sought to convince mankind that we can live apart from God, escape His authority, overcome our weaknesses and defy the reality of death.

The advocates of transhumanism promise an “evolution of human life” beyond the limits of mere mortals, a future where human consciousness can be uploaded into machines, where man can merge with technology, and where death itself is said to be conquered. In essence, man seeks to become his own god, independent of his Creator.

Yuval Harari, an Israeli professor speaking at The Davos Forum in 2016 stated; “Humanity will be divided between a superelite of improved humans and a mass of useless people” and that “power is in the hands of those that control the algorithms.”

In a 2017 interview with the Chinese Communist Party’s online magazine ‘The People’s Daily’ Harari said, “humankind is on the verge of the greatest revolution ever. The combination of machine learning and biotechnology will give humankind the ability to start engineering new life forms such as cyborgs, super-humans and AI. The main products of the future economy will not be food, textiles and vehicles, but rather bodies, brains and minds. This will be not just the greatest revolution in history, but the greatest revolution in biology since the appearance of life on earth.”

In 2020 Harari spoke at the World Economic Forum’s Davos meeting in which he stated, “In the coming decades, AI and biotechnology will give us ‘godlike’ abilities to reengineer life, and even to create completely new life- forms. After four billion years of organic life shaped by natural selection, we are about to enter a new era of inorganic life shaped by intelligent design. Our intelligent design is going to be the new driving force of the ‘evolution’ of life and in using our new ‘divine’ powers of creation we might make mistakes on a cosmic scale. In particular, governments, corporations and armies are likely to use technology to enhance human skills that they need..” (www.weforum.org/stories/2020/01/yuval-hararis-warning-davos)

If man thinks he can be re-engineer life with technology and become immortal, then there is no need to acknowledge their Creator or our redeemer Jesus Christ. A renewed mind, a restored, perfect, supernatural immortal body only comes through faith in Jesus Christ and not through mortal sinful man’s technology and human wisdom.

Technological progress has marked every age of history, and for many of these advances we can rightly be thankful; yet when technology is pursued in direct rebellion against God, its consequences can be catastrophic.

In Genesis 10 we are introduced to Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD, whose name carries the idea of rebellion. The Scripture tells us, “..the beginning of his kingdom was Babel..” (Genesis 10:10). It was within his kingdom that we see direct defiance of God’s command to replenish the earth seen in Genesis 9. At Babel humanity united in open resistance to God to try and stay as one, through the building of the Tower of Babel.

Humans then were not primitive caveman as some might think, but mankind was intelligent and advancing both in technology and rebellion. “And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth” (Gen 11:3-4).

These skilled builders were capable of innovation and coordination, but their progress was not in godliness but in arrogance and there are those that think that the tower was an attempt to have both a one world religion and a one world government.

History often repeats itself. Soon we may very well see another like Nimrod who will be the Antichrist attempting to unify the whole of mankind under a one world government and a one world religion in defiance of God. The Antichrist and his false prophet will use all the advances of modern technology to advance his kingdom militarily, commercially, politically and religiously in defiance of God.

“And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.  Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six” (Rev.13:15-18).

One day every city and monument that man erects in pride will crumble to dust and the Lord will establish His own eternal city, built by His hand for his glory and for the redeemed of every age. In that day it will be God Himself that unites the nations in righteousness and holiness.

“And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it” (Rev. 21.24).
