Dear HBC Family and Friends,

Amos began his prophetic ministry to Israel by listing the sins of its neighbors: Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon, and Moab. He condemned them for brutal acts of war, human rights abuses, and slave trading. He then turned his critique toward Israel, warning that just as God had called these pagan nations into account, so would His judgment come upon Israel. Amos warned the people that their prosperity hid a severe internal rot, including:

·         Abuse of the poor: The wealthy elite crushed people in need, cheated workers out of fair wages, and even sold poor people into debt slavery for trivial amounts.

·         Corrupt justice: Judges and leaders took bribes in court, denying everyday citizens fair treatment.

·         Empty religion: People participated in lavish religious festivals and sacrifices but ignored basic kindness, honesty, and mercy in daily life.

Amos prophesied that the nation would fall and be conquered by Assyria. However, he ended with a promise of hope and future restoration for a remnant of the people.

This sermon is titled “The Fall of a Nation.” Please read Amos 9:1-10 in preparation for this study, and be prepared to see the parallels to what is happening in America today.
