  In my 11th-grade U.S. History class, Mrs. W.L. Green required each student to memorize and recite this portion of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

“Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that the nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate — we cannot consecrate — we cannot hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”

News Stories that Connect with Biblical Prophecy

My Fellow Watchmen,

Due to the lack of true discipleship, I spent the first 18 years of my Christian life wandering in the wilderness of faith. God used that deficit as a part of His call upon my life, to the point that, regardless of the staff position in the churches I’ve served, the basic motive of my ministry has always focused on children and youth, with the desire to see them have total access to the biblical knowledge and the personal discipleship training that I didn’t get in those formative years.

In that regard, I was heartbroken in the early 80s to see the focus of the children’s and youth ministries change from biblical and theological education and personal discipleship to Christian entertainment and activities. That may have been the Church’s greatest failure over the last century, and it’s now showing up in our teenagers and young adults.

Let’s do the math. The parents of today’s Gen Z are predominantly from Generation X (born 1965–1980). This means they were teenagers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A significant portion also includes older Millennials (born 1981–1988), many of whom were teenagers in the late 1990s and early 2000s when the drastic changes were made.

Well, the results are in: Gen Z is the least Christian generation in America! Less than 1% of Gen Z adults hold a biblical worldview – the lowest of any generation. Sadly, many of these teenagers and young adults were involved in an evangelical church during their formative years. However, without being trained and equipped with solid biblical truth, their faith in God is not strong enough to survive today’s cultural pressures.

 The good news is that many of these young adults are hungry for truth and searching for it.  The bad news is they aren’t finding that truth in today’s churches because today’s churches are focused on entertainment and emotionalism rather than the expository biblical proclamation that results in spiritual transformation and genuine worship.

 The question is whether the Church is willing to recognize the seriousness of this moment before an entire generation slips even further away.
