I was surfing the internet the other day and chanced upon a sermon that told the story of a healthy dog who was euthanised, before being cremated at the same time as her dead owner. The dog was called Emma, a shih tzu, a breed originating in Tibet, and developed by the Chinese. (See portrait above.)

This event caused international outrage. The preacher of this sermon, and this monkey, find it ironic that you humans hold the life of an – admittedly – cute-looking dog as being more valuable than the life of one of your unborn babies.

I was astonished to find that you abort (murder) over 153,425 babies a day – 56 million a year.

I am just so glad to be a chimpanzee in a comfortable zoo, rather than a conceived human being in the womb. It is a paradox of this era that human beings value animals more than they value their own off-spring.

To give you an idea of the care we are given consider the following recent true story:

Taronga Zoo Conservation Society, Australia, is home to a renowned chimpanzee group. The group welcomed a tiny new addition to experienced mother, Shiba, in July this year – just in time for World Chimpanzee Day which was celebrated on July 14.

The new baby, whose name is Safiri, and mother are doing extremely well despite the crisp weather. Safiri has been spotted suckling her mother’s milk and is growing stronger every day. Taronga now has 21 chimpanzees in their dynamic group with the oldest chimpanzee named Spitter going on 60 next year.

‘Having another little female really helps us balance out our group and having Sabeli our one and a half year old as a playmate will really help with Safiri’s growth and development’ Primate Keeper Janet said. (A top class Primate keeper this Janet!)

Mother Shiba is a very experienced mother and is extremely protective. They are both doing well. Good to see Chimpanzees celebrating life.
