PASTOR WAYNE WRITES:

October 10, 2026

Dear HBC Family and Friends,

In the Christian life, nothing is more important than the assurance of our salvation: the confident assurance that our names have been written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Having struggled with this for the first 18 years of my Christian life, I know that such blessed assurance is not based on feelings or our ability to live a perfect or sinless life. Neither is it based on our “good works,” nor is it rooted in a “decision” we made when we were younger; otherwise, our assurance would rest on our ability to keep ourselves saved.

Our assurance of salvation rests on our faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross. Eternal salvation is God’s gift of grace to those who, by their faith alone, receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. (Ephesians 2:8–9). The Bible clearly states that whoever believes in the Son has eternal life (John 3:36; 1 John 5:13).

How can we know that we are truly saved? By the Holy Spirit’s witness. Romans 8:16 says: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”

The title of this sermon is: “Is Your Name Written in the Lamb’s Book of Life?” Read Revelation 21:22-27 and Ephesians 1.

THE WATCHMEN’S REPORT

October 10, 2026

My Fellow Watchmen,

When the Israelites returned to Jerusalem after decades of Babylonian exile, they faced a daunting task. The city lay in ruins, and their identity was fractured. Under Nehemiah’s leadership, they worked together until the massive stone walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt.

However, according to Nehemiah 8:15, when the priest Ezra read the Law from the book they had found in the ruins, the people discovered an ancient command that they had forgotten called “The Feast of Tabernacles,” also known as “The Feast of Booths,” or “Sukkot.” God’s instructions were simple: “Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.”

God designed the Feast of Tabernacles as a living memorial. Every year, the Israelites were commanded to step away from the safety of their permanent homes and live for seven days in fragile, makeshift shelters. The elements they gathered to build these booths carried profound significance:

• Olive branches: Symbolizing anointing, peace, and the enduring presence of the Holy Spirit.

• Myrtle branches: Representing beauty arising from ashes, a testament to restoration.

• Palm branches: Serving as symbols of victory, praise, and triumph over hardship.

The huts were intentionally uncomfortable. If the weather turned, the branch roof offered little protection. If the wind blew, the structures shook. This vulnerability was intentional. Leaving a fortified stone home to sleep under a canopy of leaves was a radical act of humility. It declared, “I am not self-sufficient. My wealth, my strength, and my walls cannot save me. I am held by something—and Someone—greater than myself.”

The timeless truth of the Feast of Tabernacles is that true security comes not from walls or wealth, but from God alone. Walls can crumble, and wealth can vanish overnight. But God’s presence remains steadfast.

Looking back over the seasons of our lives—the wilderness wanderings, the painful exiles, and the mountaintop victories—we can see an unbroken thread of divine faithfulness. Living with a “booth mentality” means acknowledging that our ultimate protection isn’t found in the structures we build, but in the God who holds us. In every shifting season, we can rest deeply, knowing that the One who carried us through the wilderness is the same One holding us today.
