DOGS IN SPACE
On this day in 1966 Russia fired two stray dogs into space. Us Chimps did not have it all our own way –
Spacedogs Veterok and Ugoljok
Veterok (Ветерок, “Light Breeze”) and Ugolyok (Уголёк, “Coal”) were launched on 22 February 1966 on board Cosmos 110, and spent 22 days in orbit before landing on 16 March.[3] This spaceflight of record-breaking duration was not surpassed by humans until Soyuz 11 in June 1971 and still stands as the longest space flight by dogs.

How things have changed in 50 years. And, How things have not.
Space technology has progressed to landing people on the moon, and bringing them back, unmanned flights to Saturn and beyond our solar system.
Dogs still remain giving unconditional friendship to anyone!
I know what I prefer.
Nothing like taking a faithful doggy for walkies! I think a Dog’s life is, on the whole, a happy one. I feel the same as the dogs, happy and content with my lot, that is why I am concerned about evolution making me human, not at all sure I want this to happen! Thanks for your ongoing observations. I remember this event well, followed soon after by the first man in space – Yuri Gagarin. Everyone was in awe of what was being achieved, and the competitive spirit between the Russians and Americans…especially to eventually land someone on the Moon. Pres. Kennedy promised to achieve that. How basic it seems now!
But how inspiring also Paul, don’t you think? The Russians send dogs into orbit, but who would think a private person would send their private vehicle off to Mars quite soon after (soon in cosmic terms!) Elon Musk is a trail blazer!
Thanks for your continuing interest in my Monkey Musings.

Wow! The animals win again. Tho’ I believe I will take a trip into space (if that is where Heaven is) one day. Can’t wait. Milton
Well see my review of Imagine Heaven – that book will get you well prepared. I am concerned that monkeys might miss out though. Gibber! Gibber! Chugley
