50 YEARS SINCE FIRST CHIMPS FLEW IN SPACE
Ham was the first chimpanzee to fly in space, (January 31st, 1961) as reported on my Blog on 16th May 2017. (His name was derived from the initials Holloman Air Force Base Aero Medical.)
Enos was the second chimpanzee launched into space by NASA. He was the first chimpanzee, and third “hominid” after cosmonauts Yuri Gagarin and Gherman Titov, to achieve Earth Orbit. (Strange ideas about yourselves some of you humans have – I thought that you called your selves “primates”!) Of course, Ham’s flight was sub-orbital but Enos achieved Earth Orbit and Weightlessness.
Enos’s flight occurred on November 29, 1961. Enos was brought from the Miami Rare Bird Farm on April 3, 1960 – the same place from which Ham originated. Enos suffered an equipment malfunction while weightless in orbit. No matter whether he pressed the correct button or not he received 35 electric shocks through his feet. He showed remarkable ability to stick to his job in spite of this discomfort.
Sadly, Enos died of dysentery around a year after his heroic flight. As my readers would know, Enos was the name of Seth – the son of Adam’s son. The name means ‘Mortal Man – Forgetful – Despaired Of’. Our chimpanzee astronaut was certainly not forgetful. He paved the way for mortal man to exist in Space – a feat that generations of humans had despaired of ever achieving.
I was touched to read that you humans are trying to honour my relations, Ham and Enos. You have created a Chimp sanctuary, please read the story below.
Today marks the 59th anniversary of Ham’s flight into space – let’s honor him by adding Ham and Enos into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2021. As unwilling participants in the space program, they paved the way for space exploration, yet they remain largely unrecognized. Sign this petition to urge the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation to add Ham and Enos to the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame. Save the Chimps honors Ham and Enos for their courage, and their unwilling sacrifice. The Space Chimps, or “Astrochimps,” hold a special place in the hearts of everyone at Save the Chimps. It was the plight of the Air Force chimps, the chimpanzees used in the early days of space research, and their descendants, that inspired our late founder Dr. Carole Noon to establish Save the Chimps. The U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame (AHOF) opened in 1990 as a place where the accomplishments of astronauts are celebrated and showcased to the public. Located at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, visitors get a glimpse into space flight through the world’s largest collection of personal astronaut memorabilia. Every year, AHOF honors a class of astronauts that have excelled in their accomplishments in space or in their contributions to the advancement of space exploration. Save the Chimps believes that Ham and Enos deserve to be recognized for their early advancement of space exploration, not because their use in space research is something to celebrate, but because they deserve to be honored for their sacrifices. P.S. Of course, the Save The Chimp organization – admirable that it is – does not know that the space chimps were ‘unwilling’. How can it? It is run by humans.
