SHORT (EN) ED OUT….
Thank you to my reader, Gerry, who sent this note through from Bob Trevan:
“There are almost 20 million cars in Australia – half that is 10 million.
Depending on what you read there’s around 50 kg of lithium used in a car battery.
That means you will need around 500 million kg of lithium to reach Labor’s target.
Lithium is a 1% ore body (you need to mine 100 tonnes of dirt to get one tonne of ore) – that means you will need mine 50 billion kilograms of dirt just to come up with the raw material.
You will also need other metals to act as the anode and cathode.
It then takes further energy to turn these materials into batteries, (usually done offshore).
While lithium batteries may be effective for small appliances, it is not feasible for them to be ever being scaled up to meet the demands of industry – and definitely not without leaving a massive footprint on the environment or being produced at a reasonable cost.
Given they also have a limited life, there’s the issue of recycling and further extraction to cover depreciation of the original material.”

Wow…those are very substantial amounts Gerry has cited. And these figures only apply to Australia’s lithium needs! I just can’t see how Bill Shorten’s electric car plans for us can be practically implemented in this vast land that presently has very few fast recharging stations. I feel this electric car idea needs major review if it’s supposed to be implemented by 2030!
This monkey thinks Shorten’s crackers. He’d be better spending the money on high speed rail and get some of the trucks off our roads, they shake the zoo something terrible! Gibber! Gibber! Chugley
Dear Chugley,
Australia is now in election mode.
Say anything to get the votes! Promise anything to get the votes! Do anything to get the votes!
If one has said, promised, done anything and got the votes. Then it is time to review the latest economic situation and say it cannot be done because of the sins of the last government. If that does not work it is time to declare an “inoperative” promise.
An observation: Currently there is a large corporate takeover offer being made for a lithium mine leaseholder. Makes one wonder what is going on. Just observing!
Yes it seems that way David! What a dreadful recipe for running a beautiful Country! Can’t imagine why they think Lithium will be a good seller? Are humans really that stupid? Gibber Gibber! Chugley
