HIGH FLIGHT
John Gillespie Magee Jr. (9 June 1922 – 11 December 1941)[ was a World War 2 Anglo-American Royal Canadian Air Force pilot and poet, who wrote the poem High Flight. He was killed in an accidental mid-air collision in a Spitfire over England in 1941, flying with the Royal Air Force.
This is one of Algy’s poems, he tells me, that fills him with nostalgia. He feels that the war drums are again sounding from many quarters in your world…He remembers so many young men who gave their lives for the freedom you have all enjoyed carelessly for so long. He wonders whether their sacrifice was appreciated by this seemingly selfish generation of human beings.
