FIRST SCHOOL LESSONS IN AUSTRALIA
Thanks to a diligent reader who sent me this interesting piece of Christian History about Australia. Very helpful to me in my battle understanding whether evolution or Creation is true!
My reader was walking through Sydney, some time ago now, when he came across a seemingly insignificant memorial at the intersection of Castlereagh, Hunter and Bligh Streets, overlooking Circular Quay.
Education in Australia began with school lessons being held in the first church in Australia, erected by colony chaplain, Richard Johnson at Sydney Cove, but I have noticed that it’s only the students of Christian schools that commemorate this.
For anybody interested, (why wouldn’t you be?), the first sermon was given on 3rd February 1788, eight days after the arrival of the First Fleet in Port Jackson.

Christians began education in Australia?? Oh we can’t have that in our history books, Chugley!
Yes, that would make evolutionists uncomfortable wouldn’t it Kyle? Gibber! Gibber! Chugley
Apparently Rev Johnson was instructed by Colony officials to only deliver sermons to the convicts of a “moral lesson” nature…no evangelising was permitted.
Also, I wonder what the homesick and languishing convicts thought of that first sermon topic. I wouldn’t be surprised if they mocked scornfully when being told they should consider “The Lord and all His benefits” towards them…the “benefit” being the hell-hole the Old Bailey Judge had sent them to!!
Interesting history there Paul! Remember your namesake rejoiced even when in prison, some hell holes they were also! Its got me Gibbered! Chugley
