Gibber! Gibber!

When Jesus cried out from the cross, “It is finished,” God’s divine justice was satisfied, His blood was shed, our sins were forgiven, the sting of death was conquered, our salvation was secured, the price of our redemption was paid, and our righteousness was perfected. And the fact that Jesus resurrected from the grave, just as He said He would be, proves that what He did on the cross for us was for real: Jesus is our Savior and our Lord.

THE WATCHMEN’S REPORT
News Stories that Connect with Biblical Prophecy
By Wayne J. Edwards, March 14, 2026
My Fellow Watchmen,
One of the most startling news stories I read this week was about Canada’s Assisted Suicide Program. Based on current trends, Canada’s “Medical Assistance in Dying” (MAiD) program is now among the leading causes of death nationwide. Canada is set to become the first modern nation to surpass 100,000 euthanasia deaths in under a decade. One in 20 deaths is due to legally-assisted suicide, which averages out to be about 45 deaths daily. What began as a narrow option for the terminally ill is now routine for those facing disability, isolation, poverty, or mental health challenges. Critics ask: Are we addressing suffering or eliminating the sufferer?
Canada’s numbers dwarf those of other nations with legalized euthanasia. Switzerland has permitted assisted suicide for about two decades and recorded fewer than 9,000 deaths. Belgium has had roughly 33,000 deaths over more than 20 years. In the United States, where assisted suicide is legal in several states, deaths total just over 5,000 across two decades. Only the Netherlands has a higher share of deaths by euthanasia, at 5.8 percent, compared to Canada’s 5.1 percent.
In light of these numbers, as Canada approaches its 100,000th assisted death, the country is confronting a sobering question: Is this the fulfillment of compassionate medicine–or the quiet redefinition of how a society values life itself?
Suicide is the ultimate “I give up” statement. Suicide is a permanent “solution” to temporary problems. Suicide is believing that life’s temporary problems are too difficult for God to solve, i.e., Suicide is the ultimate admission from a person that he or she does not have, or is not experiencing, the abundant life God promises through Christ (John 10:10).
Suicide is a sin for the following two reasons, one theological and one practical: (1) it is God and God alone who has the right to determine life and death, and (2) suicide reveals a belief that God is not powerful enough to help you solve your problems. Whether a person who commits suicide goes to heaven is a question that is not within our purview. A pastor friend once said, “A decision made in haste does not negate the grace of God.” That statement has comforted many parents who said farewell to their children who took their own lives. However, to plan one’s own death is to commit suicide, and the tragedy is that the grieving family will never know for sure if their loved ones are in heaven or hell.
Suicide, by any means, is the ultimate act of selfishness – I will do what I want to do with my life!
