History Doesn’t Repeat Itself
Mankind Just Doesn’t Learn from History
Wayne J Edwards
“Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it!” Philosopher George Santayana is credited for that statement, although his original line was, “Those who can’t REMEMBER the past are condemned to repeat it.” While the statement itself is hard to disagree with, as we look at the world’s stage today, the truth is that history is driven by man’s sinful nature, and the fact is, as Solomon said, “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 1:9 (KJB)
Take the issue of war. In 1914, H.G. Wells published a book entitled “The War That Will End War,” referring to the First World War of 1914-1918. Obviously, WWI was not history’s final war. According to what I have learned, the way WWI ended actually instigated an even more destructive WWII. Of course, there were many wars before WWI and many wars after WWII. According to the Scriptures, there will be wars and rumors of wars until that final Battle of Armageddon. Why? World leaders who do not gain wisdom from the past are bound to follow the patterns of the leaders before them.
Think of the investment of blood – forget the treasure – we recently spilled in Iraq and Afghanistan. While America’s involvement in the war may have been warranted, the way it was suspended (not ended) may have left the door open for an even more devastating war, to the delight of those who want endless wars. Those who survived the horrors of war look at what wasn’t accomplished and are now asking if their service was worth it.
This very morning, the war-mongers, munitions dealers, and corrupt politicians in America are not only poking the Russian bear in a proxy war in Ukraine, but they are also prodding the China dragon by sending Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in the hopes of enticing China to take military action against the United States. Why? The only way the United States can overcome the current financial recession is to get involved in a war. And since the United States owes China over 1-Trillion dollars…well? History also shows when the political party in power is facing severe public criticism for its policies and decisions, the threat of war may keep them from being defeated in the next election. Thirdly, what better way to cover her husband’s arrest for DUI and his illegal stock purchases than to “act the martyr” by taking such a risky trip?
In response to this intentional war baiting, the Chinese defense ministry says it will launch a targeted military operation. We will have to wait and see what that is, but rest assured, it will be another step towards war. Why? Because war is the only way lost man knows how to deal with conflict, and according to Ephesians 6:10-17, every war we have fought in the past, or will fight in the future, is a proxy war between God and Satan; a war that will not be over until Jesus returns at the end of the Great Tribulation and destroys the evil one forever.
The world is becoming a terrifying place, and even many unsaved people are becoming aware of the ominous days ahead. However, a proper understanding of biblical prophecy assures us that while perilous times are ahead for us all, and that may very well include martyrdom for some, because of our expressed faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, we will not endure the wrath of God as John described in Revelation 6-18.
No, history is not repeating itself – we have come to the end of man’s 6000 years of failed attempts to find the meaning and purpose to life apart from the Person and work of Jesus Christ. Rather than being attracted to the staged productions of our political leaders, let me urge you to lift your eyes to the Eastern skies, for the stage is being set for the greatest revelation in the history of the world – the return of Jesus Christ as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, and the multitude of signs, including the wickedness of man, serve to confirm it. Are you ready?
