DANIEL 11:26 Continuing The Prophecy given to Daniel, describing the pivotal events for The People of Daniel, The Jews, From 536 B.C.E. Until 135 C.E. Daniel 11:26 focuses on The Reign of Antiochus IV (175 B.C.E. – 164 B.C.E.) particularly The Sixth Syrian War (170 B.C.E. – 168 B.C.E.)
“Yea!
- They That Feed on The Portion of His [Ptolemy VI (180B.C.E. – 164 B.C.E. & 163 – 145 B.C.E.)] Meat shall destroy Him. And
- His {The Army of Antiochus IV} Army shall Overflow; And
- Many in the army of the Ptolemy VI shall fall down slain.”
The Guardians of Ptolemy VI did in effect destroy Ptolemy VI. Their armies were defeated by the far more experienced Seleucid commander, Antiochus IV.
Antiochus IV attacked and seized Pelusium on the border of Egypt giving them supplies and access to all of Egypt. Ptolemy’s armies were defeated leaving only the city of Alexandria.
Ptolemy VI was captured by Antiochus IV who, by virtue of the fact that he was the brother of Cleopatra Syra, Ptolemy VI’s mother, was his uncle.
Antiochus IV’s defeat and capture of Ptolemy VI and almost all of Egypt was not due entirely to his military superiority. Egypt’s Ally, The Roman Republic, was involved in The Third Macedonian War (171 B.C.E. 168 B.C.E.) and could not at this time come to the aid of the young Ptolemy VI.
In the light of the prophecy, one can observe what is taking place in the history of The Jewish People by this military succuss of Antiochus IV:
- His pride is being cultivated. He has succeeded in this capture of Ptolemy VI and almost all of Egypt in extending the Seleucid Empire almost to include all of Egypt – a feat which no Seleucid king had accomplished.
- When this pride is humbled by The Roman Republic in 168 B.C.E. Antiochus IV is enraged. On his return from Egypt, he launches his ferocious attack on The Jews. (A rumour had circulated that Antiochus IV had been killed in Egypt; Jason, the ousted High Priest had made a surprize attack on Jerusalem; Menalaus, Antiochus IV’s chosen High Priest, was forced to flee. In retaliation, Antiochus attacks Jerusalem).
- Antiochus IV’s renewed attacks on The Jewish Religious Practices lead to The Uprising of The Maccabees who continually defeat the stronger Seleucid forces.
- Antiochus IV dies en route to his Eastern Provinces.
- The Seleucid Empire is divided by the two claimants to the throne – as is The Ptolemaic Kingdom and Judaea is able to negotiate its independence as an independent kingdom.
As Mortals tread “The Arches of The Years”, it may seem as though The Pride of Man is triumphant, but just as at The Confusion of The Tongues of Men at Babel, over and over again in history, THE MOST HIGH GOD brings down The Haughty.
Daniel 11:26 is leading up to the downfall of The Seleucid and The Ptolemaic Kingdoms and the ultimate rise of The Roman Republic -and then The Roman Empire – as the Supreme Power of The Mediterranean World.
Antiochus IV was aware of The Roman Republic’s Power but did not honour the people to whom it was revealed. He should have heeded the visions given to Daniel of The Fourth Beast of The World in Daniel 7:7.
And, of course, this mighty and haughty image, which so graphically depicts The Great Powers of The World will itself be destroyed by THE LORD JESUS, THE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
“And HE hath on HIS Vesture, and on HIS Thigh A Name Written:
KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” (Revelation 19:16)
