Daniel 11:14
‘And in Those Times [ when Antiochus III determined to avenge his defeat at Raphia in The Fifth Syrian War] there shall many stand up against The King of The South.
Also, The Robbers of Thy People shall exalt themselves to establish The Vision;
But They shall fall.’
Co-Co, The Chimpanzee Schoolmaster, is not certain that the several interpretations of this verse are logical. He begs leave to further ponder the Scripture and apologizes for the delay. (He refuses to write his views unless he believes that they are in line with The Scriptures.)
He wonders:
- Who are ‘The Many Who Stand Up Against The King of The South’?
- Whether ‘The Robbers of Thy People’ are apostate Jews, as some of the commentaries state, or are they those who would rob the province of Judaea, (at this time under Ptolemaic control before Antiochus’s victory at Panion described in Verses 15 & 16)?
- What ‘Vision‘ is being established?
- Is the Aetolian general, Scopas, who fought against Antiochus III’s initial taking of Coele-Syria for the Ptolemaic dynasty, being noted in this verse?
Co-Co would rather ‘refrain his lips’ rather than write multitude of words that he is not assured are in accordance with The Word of GOD.

Co-Co asks some excellent questions…though somewhat imponderable… to my mind anyway!
One of the questions – the one asking about the “Robbers of the Jews” brought this thought to mind that pertains to the modern-day: The Jews, as God’s chosen people to fulfil His Will for this sin-sick world, are always hated. I see the “robbers” as being the world generally….and particularly the surrounding Islamic nations who would try to “rob” Israel of her rightful place.
Both the world and Islamic enemies would (and do) seek to “establish” (or even force) their vision for the world’s future….which is not God’s Will at all…it is rebellious against God. Perhaps the “Vision” upheld and idolised by the world is the antichrist??
Ultimately, in God’s timing, the Vision will fail…and fall when Jesus returns.
Just my 10 cents worth looking at these verses through 21st century eyes!!
Dear Mr Archer,
Co-Co, The coconut-throwing Chimpanzee Schoolmaster, thanks you for your ’21st century views’ of the questions troubling him regarding Daniel 11:14. It is most gracious of you to respond to his weekly post at length. He is appreciative of your insights.
He understands that you were once a schoolmaster, but he has been informed that you were not in the habit of throwing coconuts at your errant pupils. Humans miss out on so much!
Your humble servant,
Co-Co
