Dear Heritage Family and Friends,
As we witness the aftermath of the recent hurricanes, we are confronted with the age-old question: Why does God allow suffering? While God uses these natural disasters to remind us of our vulnerability and the inevitability of death, it’s important to remember that God is not the cause of suffering. As James 1:13 states, ‘With evil things, God cannot be tried, nor does He try anyone.’
A much more profound question is: Why does God allow Christians to suffer physical persecution? The Apostles Paul and Peter said it is to help the Christian understand the suffering Jesus Christ endured for our eternal salvation. In Philippians 3:8-11, the Apostle Paul said he had suffered “the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ…that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings.” Paul said, if there were things about Jesus Christ that could only be learned through physical suffering, so be it!
Spurgeon wrote: “God is too good to be unkind, and He is too wise to be mistaken. And when we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart. When you are so weak that you cannot do much more than cry, you coin diamonds with both your eyes. The sweetest prayers God ever hears are the groans and sighs of those who have no hope in anything but his love.”
This Sunday, we will continue our sermons from 1 Peter. The title of this sermon is: “A Living Hope – Rejoicing in Your Suffering.” This sermon is a timely message that resonates with the challenges many of our brothers and sisters in Christ are facing today. It reminds us of our hope in Christ and the importance of standing firm in our faith, even in adversity.

PASTOR WAYNE WRITES:
My Fellow Watchmen,
In the last sentence of the last article in this edition of The Watchmen’s Report, writer Victoria Taft said, “It’s clear that Americans can and should count on each other in tough times. But the federal government? Not so much.” Indeed, we have seen the truth of that statement in the government’s response to those severely affected by the recent hurricanes.
On April 1, 1979, President Carter established the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with the dual functions of civil defense and emergency management. The agency’s mission is to support the citizens and first responders and promote that, as a nation, we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards. Given their attitude and actions over the last week, it’s time to overhaul, if not dismantle the whole organization.
Many of us who have been involved in hands-on ministry to those affected by devastating storms were so moved by the needs of the people, especially in North Carolina, we thought about packing the gear and some supplies and heading for the hills. However, after hearing from those who live there and from others who were already there to help, it became clear: FEMA DID NOT WANT THE HELP OF CHRISTIANS AND COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATIVES. This was not a case of not needing our help but a blatant and deliberate rejection of faith-based support. They didn’t want to “work together as a nation” to help the people in need – i.e., the people didn’t need God, just the government!
Active compassion is the evidence of our salvation. Therefore, when the federal government tells us we cannot do what our Lord has commanded, THAT IS THE PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS. It is also a reflection of where America is on the descent to destruction as outlined in Romans 1:18-32 – Vs. 28 – “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind.” By refusing to partner with Christians to help others in their time of need, the federal government prevented those who were hurting from seeing the love of God through the hearts and hands of others.
This current administration believes America no longer needs God. Beloved, government is not the answer to all of our problems. Only God can save us from the power of sin that controls our decisions and enslaves us to arrogance, greed, selfishness, racism, sexism, and perversion. Only God can save America from its enemies – including self-destruction. Unless, and until the leaders of our government return to God for guidance, wisdom, and strength, regardless of who is in the Whitehouse, America will remain an ungodly nation. However, in view of the biblical prophecies which are about to be fulfilled, I can assure you, prideful America will soon be crying out unto God. PW
